The Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Liberian Women and Sports Association (LWASA) ended a two day intensive training for women and girls in sports at the Konuwa High School auditorium in Bardnesville.
The program entitled Taking sports to women & girls in Monrovia and Lower Montserrado County brought together over 90 girls and women. Speaking at the program, the president of LWASA Debora Williams disclosed that the training is intended to encourage more female participation in sports and make their contribution. She said it is to encouraged women and girls to exercise their potentials in sports and to get the opportunity to represent Liberia internationally. According to her, LWASA has been working with the Ministry of Youth and Sports since 2011, with the ministry sponsoring many programs in order to empower women in sports. She stressed with reduction in the Ministry’s subsidy, the association was unable to carry out many programs including this program. The program brought together girls from schools and clubs from around the Bardnersville region under the topics the need for women referees in Liberia, history about women in sports in Liberia and the role of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in the development of women sports in Liberia. Madam Williams pointed out that in 2016, the association was badly affected and was able to use it meager resources to host a program to teach the importance of sports at elementary, junior and senior high schools. Also speaking at the program, a veteran sport administrator, Napoleon Jaeploe asserted that MYS is responsible to design and plan sports program and implement them at the level of the associations and federations as well as districts and counties. He told the audience that the Ministry organizes sporting tournaments in the leeward counties including the famous national county meet. According to him, they organize the intra-ministerial tournament which is use as recreational aspect for workers of the various ministries, agencies and public cooperation.
