Sen. Johnson said the current Government has underestimated the cardinal importance of the Liberia national security due to the presence of international forces, backed by the international support the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf administration is receiving while the homegrown security personnel are undergoing arduous condition.
The Nimba County Senator and founder of the MDRP made the statement on Friday when he declared his candidacy to contest in the upcoming National Presidential Elections slated for October 2017.
He noted that the Government is taking advantage of the good nature of the men and women in the national security sector who are experiencing increasing hardship because of their patriotic commitment to their country, and admonished the national legislature to ensure that the security budget is increased.
Addressing a mammoth crowd at the Paynesville Town Hall in Paynesville on Friday, Senator Johnson called on the Government not to overlook national security noting: “security is a pillow of democracy, and no democratic nation can survive or exist without a strong national security.”
The Nimba County lawmaker said the failure of the Government to support the security sector with adequate incentives poses a threat to the democratic process in Liberia, adding it could lead to serious disenchantment in Liberia.
He also admonished politicians and the Liberian people not to allow the re-emergence of one party system in the country, but stressed the need for cohesiveness between the indigenes to defeat the hegemony of the Americo-Liberians.
“This is the time for the natives to come together and elect one indigenous son who will reflect true patrimony and responsibility over the land as Liberians,” Senator Johnson said.
He observed that gone are the days when the Executive Mansion decides who becomes the next President of Liberia, while such leadership is being imposed on the people because of one party system.
He called on the Liberian people to rise up against such idea, and promised to ensure that the elections will be free and fair.
Members of Senator Prince Johnson’s party were in jubilant mood as they called on their political leader to remain firm ensuring that he becomes the next President of this Republic.
