At a one day symposium of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Youth Empowerment Project held last week, Madam Gbowee informed the gathering that most politicians are noted for taking undue advantage of the youthful population in order to realize their ambition and as such youth must prioritize and pursue their general growth and development.
According to her, the full political participation of the youth in any electoral process remains cardinal but participation must involve careful individual thinking and observations of candidates and not about candidate financial background or what is offered in return.
“Don’t allow yourself to be used by politicians to accomplish their selfish interest; rather focus on your individual growth and development through the attainment of quality education that would equip you for the future,” the Nobel Laureate emphasized.
The one day symposium brought together youths from diverse backgrounds and sought amongst others, the crafting for subsequent implementation resolutions, from the already developed policy and action plan for sustainable youth development as well as the promotion of youth participation in all areas of the society.
Organizers of the event indicated that the overall objective of the ECOWAS Youth Empowerment Project is to mobilize youth and get them (youth) adequately involved in the regional integration and developmental processes of their various countries.
“Harnessing the full potentials of the young population and their subsequent and proper placement within the scheme of the ECOWAS development objective further underscores the importance of the regional youth policy and dialogue”, the organizers mentioned.
The youth policy document brought together several stake holders in the youth development sector including programs related to the full articulation of youth issues in the West African sub region.
