Africare-Liberia has turned over to the Bong County Health Team a modern health center in Palala, Kpaii District.
Construction of the US$128,000 health facility is in furtherance of Africare’s continued support to the Liberian health sector. Speaking at the turning over ceremony in Palala Tuesday, Africare Country Director Ernest Gaie hailed the Japanese government for funding construction of the health center and termed it as “a major boost” to the county’s healthcare delivery system. Gaie said the Japanese government through its Embassy in Accra, Ghana, has been supportive of Africare, citing the construction of two maternal waiting homes in Bong County under a Japanese grant as one major success of Africare’s partnership with the Japanese. He said as the leading partner to the Bong County Health System, Africare will continue to explore opportunities to meet the healthcare needs of the county. Gaie noted that Africare is supporting over 20 clinics, as well as the C.B Dunbar and Phebe Hospitals outpatient departments and paying the incentives of non-government heath workers and support staff in Bong County. Gaie explained that the Palala Health Center does not only bring health services closer to the people, but provides relief to residents of the Panta-Kpaii Health District and parts adjacent relative to transport fare to access major health centers in the county. In remarks, the Press Secretary to the Japanese Embassy, Dr. Higuchi, termed the completion of the health center as another milestone achievement in Liberia-Japan relations. Dr. Higuchi praised Africare for its commitment to building a vibrant healthcare system in the country and reiterated Japan’s support to credible partners like Africare in the recovery process of Liberia. Receiving the keys of the health center, the administrator of the Bong County Health Team, Fatorma Jusu, said the team was grateful to all those who ensured the timely completion of the facility, especially the community people who procured the land. Jusu assured Africare and the Japanese Embassy of the county health team’s commitment to work with all stakeholders to ensure that the health center serves the intended purpose.
