The President of the Liberian National Student Union, Varney Jarsey, is currently jailed at the Monrovia Central Prison after being investigated and charged with Statutory Rape by the Women and Children Section of the Liberia National Police. The student leader was charged and sent to court on November 19, 2016.
According to the police charge sheet, Jarsey, 30, was arrested and charged following a complaint levied against him by Woyonwon in which he alleged that that his daughter, aged 15, explained to him that she was abused by the suspect. The police said during their interview the suspect categorically denied ever having sexual intercourse with the victim but admitted that he interacted with the victim at the crime scene on the date and time. The President of LINSU told the Police that on October 31, 2016, while in his room with a female guest, he heard the victim and a little boy laughing in front of his room; therefore he opened the door and told the victim and her friend to stop disturbing. Suspect Jarsey further explained that he left the victim and her friend and escorted his guest outside and he immediately went back to the house and met the victim with her friend playing in front of his room door. “I sat in front of my room door and asked the victim and the boy why they were disturbing. On November 3, a neighbor called me via phone and told me that the victim accused me of raping her,” Jarsey explained. During Police investigation, it was established that the suspect is the President of the Liberia National Student Union. It was further established that the accusation against the victim was consistent and medical reports submitted to the police stated that the victim’s hymen had multiple scars. Her private part, according to medical report, was widely dilated with whitish discharge. He was charged for statutory rape, a crime which contravenes Section 14.70 (a) (I) of the 2005 rape law of Liberia. The suspect was taken to the Monrovia City Court by Police as members of LINSU were seen in disbelief of the charge on their leader.
