Member of the Liberian delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Prince Y. Johnson, has distanced himself from the just ended five days ECOWAS Parliament delocalized meeting held in Monrovia.
The delocalized meeting which brought together regional parliamentarians was intended to formulate policy to enable regional heads of state implement recommendations from the meeting to jointly fight counterfeit medicines and expired drugs in their respective states. Senator Johnson who is one of the representatives expected to have been in attendance was not seen anywhere around the Sinkor belt, where the five days meeting were held despite reports indicating that he is in the country. His conspicuous absence from the five-day deliberations has left Liberians to ponder where or not his rift with Senator George Weah following their last ECOWAS meeting in Nigeria might have caused Johnson to miss out on the meeting. It can be recalled, following a recent ECOWAS Parliament meeting held in Abuja, Senator Johnson accused Senator Weah of collecting money and not attending ECOWAS Parliament sessions. He also accused the CDC political leader of spreading falsehoods that he (Johnson) was often interrogated at border points. Amidst the rancor between the two senators which was somehow degenerating into name-callings, Senator Alphonso Gaye of Grand Gedeh County called for a separate report from the Liberian representatives to the ECOWAS Parliament via written communication to the Senate plenary. In an apparent attempt to find an excuse for Senator Johnson’s absence at the Monrovia meeting, Senator Weah stated that one’s attendance was not mandatory by law. “Senator Johnson is not member of the Committee; if you notice, most of us here are not on this committee. We are here every day to make sure that members of our committee accommodate this committee to enable them enhance their work. Perhaps Johnson has other responsibilities to attend,” Senator Weah stated. The joint committee on Health and Social Welfare, Trade, Customs and Free Movement of the Parliament of ECOWAS Community of West African States recently organized a five days delocalized meeting in Monrovia. The Liberian representatives to ECOWAS include Senator Prince Johnson, Rep. Edwin Snowe, Rep. Jefferson Kanmoh, Rep. Haja Siryon and Senator George Weah, among others.
