The Standard Bearer of the opposition United People’s Party (UPP) Macdonald A. Wento has promised to reduce poverty by empowering more Liberians in being self-sufficient through mechanized agriculture throughout the country.
“Mechanize farming will help Liberians make large scale farms, reduce poverty also make our people more self-sufficient. Produce from their mechanized farm can put cash in their pockets,” Mr. Wento said. “Every day too many men and women across our country struggle to feed their children a nutritious meal due to the lack of the enabling environment and support from the Government. In a country where we produce enough food to feed everyone, our soils are rich for food production, yet we can’t feed our people, it is unfortunate,” Mr. Wento added. He said that many Liberians still go to bed on empty stomachs each night. At the same time, one in three suffers from some form of malnutrition in the country. The UPP Standard Bearer said Liberians are living in their own country like refugees as the result of the hard economic situation where many are living below one United States dollars a day. “When you look down PHP community and West point people are still drinking from wells that are contaminated; as the result, curable diseases are killing our people on a day to day basis,” he said. He said the UPP will shortly embark on a needs assessment tour of the country where Liberians can explain their needs in other to form part of their campaign manifesto for the 2017 elections. He also called on Liberians to change their mindset about how they see things about the country, and further encouraged Liberians to be more courageous and mindful in electing people in the October 2017 polls. The UPP Standard bearer further stressed that as the political season gets closer his party remains open for a possible merger discussion.
