Mr. Thomas said he was taking the decision in the interest of the district to avoid too much of political wrangling which has already engulfed the district for the past months resulting to conflict and other agitations.
He took the decision yesterday in a meeting hosted by youths of the district who sought answers about his desire for the would-be highly contested district seat.
He said his decision to abandon his quest for the district’s seat at the national legislature is in no way a result of fear or threats from his political opponents but in the interest of peace and security which the residents of the area are enjoying today under the leadership of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Thomas, a Banker at the GN Bank Liberia Limited stressed the need for cohesiveness, ensuring that the peace which has been attained by the Government of Liberia and the international community are secured even after the departure of President Sirleaf.
He noted that because of his family and the Government of Liberia he is leaving the race to focus on other positive ventures which will improve the lives of the youths and his family in the district.
Thomas promised to work assiduously to improve the district; even though he is no more interested in the political race of the district.
He urged all political contestants to stop their supporters from using invectives which could result to fistfights and other bad feelings that could cause animosity amongst the youths.
The head of the youths in the district expressed regrets over Thomas’ decision and said it has brought a dark day in the life of the district.
George Gweh said the decision has opened another political vacuum that could discourage the youths of the district from casting their votes in the area.
Mr. Gweh appealed to Thomas to think on the lives of the residents and take a positive step which will always keep the youths together in moving the district forward.
After announcing his withdrawal from the race, many youths burst into cries, with some of them saying, “Our voting is meaningless.”
According to the residents Thomas was petitioned last year due to his financial and moral support he rendered the district over the years.
They urged him to think about the district for next election and ensure that he will be willing to stand all the political temptations and disadvantages in politics.
