The former minister of Foreign Affairs Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan said as the country gears up for election, politicians must be cognizant that Liberians’ ambition for peace, development, and unity is more important than their individual ambitions.
According to him peace and stability are important perquisites for the achievement of all other lofty goals like the rule of law which is the strongest pillar upon which a peaceful and stable society is hinged.
“If we uphold the laws of the land, we make firmer the foundations of peace, and if we undermine the rule of law and institute the rule of men, we will undermine the foundations of peace and sooner, rather than later, the superstructure of peace and stability will come tumbling down like a pack of cards, thereby transforming our country into a hell-hole,” he added.
He made the statement yesterday in Monrovia at programs making the official endorsement ceremony of the 2017 presidential bid of Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai by the Friends of Augustine Ngafuan (FAN).
The former Minister noted that it is good to reflect on the past in order to learn critical lessons, but added that the lessons should not dwell on bemoaning the failures or celebrating the successes of the past.
This year, 2017, he pointed out, is a truly significant and historic year for Liberia as the country is scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on October 10, and it depends on the proceeding of patriotic Liberians to uplift the country or destroy it.
“The way we choose as patriotic Liberians could either uplift our country or we could destroy it; our country could be a place where investors, partners and tourist runs to or a place where they run away from,” he said.
Responding to the group, the standard bearer of the ruling Unity Party Vice President Joseph Boakai expressed gratitude and added that the decision to endorse his presidential bid was not done in his interest or in the interest of his family and friends, but rather in the interest of Liberians.
He at the same time promised good health facilities and education which according to him will provide quality services that ministers, government officials and other citizens will not have to travel out of the country to seek medical attention.
