The Regional Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) for West and Central Africa, Dr. Djibril Diallo is visiting Liberia from 25th-28thJuly 2016.
According to a press release, Dr. Diallo, during his visit, will meet with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and other key actors of the HIV response in the country. Additionally, the UNAIDS Regional Director will brief them on the implications of the newly adopted political declaration on HIV and AIDS and will present the emergency plan for the West and Central Africa region that UNAIDS is developing. Dr Djibril Diallo who would also convey a special message from the UNAIDS Executive Director, will attend a Ministerial conference on post Ebola health reforms during his stay in Monrovia. The UNAIDS press release added that during his four days mission in Monrovia, Dr. Diallo will have meetings with the following ministries: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He will also meet with the National AIDS Commission, Association of People Living with HIV and AIDS. He is also scheduled to meet members of the UN Family including the Special Representative of the Secretary General Mr. Farid Zarif and the Resident Coordinator. Dr. Diallo will climax his mission to Liberia with a press briefing with local journalists. Dr. Diallo has over 30 years' experience in international relations and diplomacy. He spearheaded initiatives for global advocacy of HIV and AIDS. Dr. Diallo helped to advance the corporate policy on shared responsibility and global solidarity, UNAIDS' vision of Getting to Zero, and worked closely with senior management to provide support in political mobilization of prominent personalities, political leaders, civil society organizations, and the media. He led the innovative "Protect the Goal" campaign to promote AIDS awareness and prevention around major sporting tournaments. As Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the African Renaissance and Diaspora Network, and Deputy Executive Director of the Global Alliance of Mayors and Leaders from Africa and of African Descent, Dr. Diallo has mobilized support to advance UNAIDS' Fast-Track Cities initiative with mayors of African descent. Prior to joining UNAIDS, Dr. Diallo served as the Director of the United Nations New York Office of Sports for Development and Peace from 2004 to 2008; Director of the Communications Office of the Administrator of UNDP from 1995 to 2005; and Special Adviser to UNICEF's Executive Director for nine years. A citizen of Senegal, Dr. Diallo earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics and Communication from the University of London. His work for peace and sustainable growth and development has been recognized by numerous national and international organizations.
