Addressing the official celebration of World Teachers Day in Monrovia, Kamara mentioned that public school teachers are currently languishing in a sorrowful state, which makes the profession not among the options that parents consider when discussing career choices with their children.
According to him, the need for appropriate salaries and emoluments for teachers with respect to the high cost of living and status upgrade cannot be overemphasized.
“In fact, there should be a cap on salaries and emoluments for politicians for the improvement of teachers wellbeing and in case you are wondering where this extra amount will come from, I would suggest appropriate cut down of costs for a number of other sectors, including the legislature and high level government officials, as well as their frequent foreign travels,” Kamara stressed.
“The community led by the government must take 100% control and responsibility for education including that of teachers for a fixed period - say 10 years. By this, quality evaluation should be held to guarantee enrolment in teachers’ education; and the Government must underwrite Free and Quality education and career upgrade program for all teachers,” Kamara said.
