The citizens noted that the hospital may close down if nothing is done by government to fully support the facility. The hospital was being run by China Union since 2011 as part of its corporate social responsibility under the 25- year Mineral Development Agreement it signed with the Liberian Government. But the company has slowed down operation at the hospital due to the drawdown of its operations this year as a result of the drop in the price of iron ore on the world market. The citizens made the call in the district Tuesday when the newly-appointed health officer for Bong County, Dr. Gabriel Logan, held discussions with them and health care providers in Fuamah District. Also speaking during the discussion, the Medical Director of the Bong Mines Hospital, Dr. Jonathan Hart, said the hospital lacks drugs and basic equipment, making the facility virtually empty. Dr. Hart appealed to the government through the Ministry of Health to provide drugs and equipment for the smooth running of the hospital, especially the out- patient department. In response to the many requests and appeals from the citizens and health workers, Dr. Logan promised to forward their appeals to the Ministry of Health for a possible prompt redress.
