Speaking on the Capitol FM, Imam Dukuly said that there have been a whole lot of “bastardization and prostitution.” He therefore proposed reduction of marriage age from 18 to 15.
He said at the age of 15 no parent should think that the child is still too young to marry because most of these children are already engaged in a lot more of vices than their parents can imagine.
“What we support is early marriage wherein you are useful and sexually active, and when you are in line with that person you can go ahead and marry that person”.
Imam Dukuly added that most of the immoral acts perpetrated by girls can be attributed to financial and economic constraints in the country.
Imam Dukuly argues the prostitution is on the increase in the country because young girls who are sexually active are not encouraged into early marriage to maintain their sanctity.
Defending his position, Imam Dukuly maintained that unless that happens, society will continue to be filled with illegitimate children born out of from prostitution.
However, Liberian psychosocial analyst Dr. Kpangbala Sengbeh disagreed with Imam Dukuly saying: “girls must not be forced into early marriage but must be left to make an independent decision.”
Dr. Sengbeh said if the girl child is not left to make the decision for herself it would cause problem for her in future.
The Parish Priest of the Immaculate Parish Rev. Father Gabriel Sawyer also disagreed with the Islamic cleric, saying, any forced marriage is a recipe for disaster.
