The National Youth Wing of the Unity People Party (UPP) has endorsed Landry Gaie as its consensus candidate for the position of representative of electoral District # 9, Montserrado County in the ensuing elections.
Speaking to reporters in a press briefing over the weekend at the party headquarter in Sinkor, UPP National Youth Chairman Michael Tipayson noted that the decision of the youth wing was predicated upon the urgent need for reform at the Legislature. According to him, the Liberian Legislature is polarized by some lawmakers who have deliberately refused to transform lives, and left the people wallowing in poverty, while seeking their own self aggrandizement. “There is a need to democratically dislodge those who have defaulted on the struggle of the young growing population, and the prospect that stands ahead of our people,” Tipayson said. “We hold the view that District 9, Montserrado County and many other districts have suffered gross leadership deficit at the Legislature, and as such the need for change is eminent and now,” he noted. The UPP Youth Chair pointed out that those lawmakers who are in the business of shortchanging the integrity and independence of the legislature are majority youths, adding, “some young lawmakers who are supposed to lead by example are the national looters”. Chairman Tipayson at the same time mandated his party’s membership to work closely with the party’s choice for the district and fully execute the decision reached. He then used the occasion to call on supporters of the UPP to continue their support to the election of Macdonald Wento and John Bleah as standard bearer and vice standard bearer on the ticket of the UPP 2017 Collaboration.
