In recent times, Mr. Cummings has signaled his intent to contest the 2017 presidency. Pundits believe that his entry in the race has stirred up paranoia among some politicians while others think he is new and does not have time now until October next year to showcase himself to the Liberian people.
The ANC was established by mainly former partisans of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and headed by soft spoken political operative, Mr. Orishall Gould, who is said to be one of the founders of CDC serving as its founding Chairman and credited with registering the party and helping to elect many Representatives and Senators of the party.
One of the issues dogging Mr. Cummings’ presidential quest is the allegation that he is an American citizen. Under the Liberian constitution, only natural born citizens may contest for the presidency.
But supporters of Cummings insist that he has always been a Liberian and that the talk about him being American is wishful thinking coming from what they call detractors. Our reporter contacted Mr. Gould, Chairman of the ANC and asked whether the ANC was going to Convention to elect Cummings and he responded: “The ANC is holding convention on the 29th and 30th instead to review policies affecting our country but also we will vote on a proposal to elect a political leader.”
Asked if it's Mr. Cummings, Gould said he is the only one who has expressed the strong desire. When quizzed on Cummings’ citizenship, Gould said the man is a pure Liberian. Born to Maryland and Nimba parents, Gould said even the President knows that Cummings is a citizen, evidenced by his recent appointment to the BWI Board as an eminent Liberian.
