The youth wing of the governing Unity Party (UP) has threatened to deal with those planning to disrupt the party’s upcoming National Convention scheduled for July 7-9 this year in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The ruling party’s Youth Wing Chairman, Amos Tweh, told newsmen in Monrovia over the weekend that it has come to the attention of the party that some surrogates of resigned member Dr. Toga Gayewea McIntosh are planning to disrupt the party convention in Gbarnga City. The tough-talking youth leader described Dr. McIntosh as “unpatriotic citizen” who does not believe in the principles of democracy, but rather wants to see things going in a wrong direction or in his favor. He said Dr. McIntosh’s departure from the party has no political effect on the convention but any attempt by his disciples to further introduce an act of hooliganism will meet the full weight of the youth wing of the party. Mr. Tweh noted that while it is true that Dr. McIntosh played a significant role during the 2005 and 2011 elections in the country, it does not mean that he was the most politically outstanding figure for the convention or an ultimate choice of the Gbarnga convention. The UP youth wing Chairman said his party believes in the principle of democracy, and the convention will be pleased to see an opposition to vice standard bearer Joseph Boakai who is now contesting to become the next standard bearer of the UP, and also presidential hopeful for 2017 general and presidential elections. He said if the former Vice President for ECOWAS believes in the political doctrines and the policies of the party, he should remain in the party and contest for the standard bearer position rather than to quit from the party and cry wolf ahead of the convention. Mr. Tweh called on youths and sympathizers supporting Dr. McIntosh not to follow his political concept but to return to the party and join the convention in Gbarnga and make the party more viable in the interest of peace and togetherness. Another member of the UP youth wing, George Appleton said the resignation of Dr. McIntosh from the UP has created political vacuum in the planning and mobilization committee. Mr. Appleton said although Dr. McIntosh has left the party, but members of the party should stop making statements which are inimical to the survival of the party. He observed that due to some inimical statements coming from partisans of the party, many people are leaving the party and joining opposition parties or formulating political institution like Speaker Alex Tyler’s LPDP. He called on the executive members of the party to control the propaganda activities of the party, noting: “unnecessary people making diabolical statements which could bring about hatred and confusion in the party”.
